Biography
Steve
James is best known as the award-winning
director, producer, and co-editor of HOOP
DREAMS, the widely acclaimed documentary that
followed nearly five years in the lives of two
young inner-city basketball players.
Produced at Kartemquin Films, HOOP DREAMS won
virtually every major critics' prize and
journalism award, was named on over 100 'ten
best movies of the year' lists, and received the
Audience Award from the Sundance Film
Festival.
In addition, HOOP DREAMS was the first
documentary to ever open or close the
prestigious New York Film Festival.
James won the coveted Directors Guild Award for
HOOP DREAMS and
"The Best New Filmmaker" award at the 1995 MTV
Movie Awards.
He was named the "1994 NATO/ShoWest Documentary
Filmmaker of the Year" and one of the "1994
Artists of the Year" by the
Chicago
Tribune.
James
was also nominated for an Academy Award for
editing,
and won an A.C.E. Editing Award.
Most
recently, James wrote and directed his first
dramatic feature,
PREFONTAINE (1997) - the story of
legendary Oregon distance runner Steve
Prefontaine.
Distributed
by Hollywood Pictures, the film stars Jared
Leto, R. Lee Ermey, Ed O'Neil and Lindsay
Crouse. It had its world premiere at the
1997 Sundance Film Festival.
Presently,
James has numerous other projects in the works
with partner Peter Gilbert. Among them: GRAND
MASTER FLASH, a feature on the legendary pioneer
artist in rap and hip-hop; STEVIE, a
documentary on a poor young man from rural
southern Illinois for whom James was a Big
Brother ten years ago; and THE NEW
IMMIGRANTS, a documentary on immigration on
which he will serve as an executive producer
with Gilbert.
James resides in the Chicago suburb of Oak Park
with his wife and their three
children.
